9.Extension Activity

Who makes title sequences?
The people who are responsible for creating title sequences are designers and also have a role called Director of title sequences many people who work in this area have to develop strong relationships with studios.

Director of title sequences Aaron Becker is famously known for his previous work such as the Purge,Insidious and The Conjouring. After working at Prologue Films in Los Angeles and Digital Kitchen in Chicago developing a strong relationship with the both, Aaron founded Becker Design in 2010, which evolved into Filmograph in 2012.

From my research im aware that many directors of title sequence gain good contacts and relationships at the studios they work as many of them begin to build their own designing companies or even filmi companies.

4 types of film openings

Titles on a blank screen out of the four is the most type of film opening used in the Industry. This usually contains different typefaces with a white typeface on top of a black background. This is the easiest way to create a film opening as technically they are fairly basic.

5.What is the purpose of a film opening

Film openings usually contain credits which are at the start of a film introducing roles, including famous actor/actress,director, writer and other main cast. The opening credits can be shown in several different ways, but usually they are shown with a background soundtrack/audio music and an opening of a scene or piece of the film. The main purpose is to excite the audience and get them extremely eager to learn what is going to happen in the particular movie.Depending on the creativity of the Director and concept of the film, the opening can contain some visual effects as well as animation and some sound effects. This all contributes to creating an interesting atmosphere usually setting the tone for the movie before the movie has even started.

Analysis of 2 title sequences

THE SOPRANOS

During the opening of this title sequence the main focus if the character driving the car through different parts of a city. There are similarities with films like the Godfather as there is a rich cigar smoking mob leader.I believe this gives the audience a rough idea that this character has some form of power as he drives through both the good parts of the city and the rough parts of the city. Things that also suggest that he is wealthy is his gold wrist watch and he is smoking a cigar,as cigars were mostly smoked by rich people as they were expensive. Also by the logo we know that there are some dangerous parts in this film as the title is in red and that colour can can mean danger. The music used is mid tempo and runs smoothly with the imagery being shown on scree. Film is directed and created by David Chase.

 21 Jump Street

This title sequence is different to the sopranos, we can tell that the film is patriotic from the American flag and the whole title sequence together has a fast pace to it. Throughout the scene there is a lot of action, violence, sexual activity and drugs from the scene i can see that the film will be based around these main categories. The music in the film is in the popular music category giving the film a upbeat atmosphere which made the movie much more appealing to the youth but older people could still enjoythe music. In some of the scenes characters would be introduced but then glimpse of which person is who in the next scene would be given to us the audience. Film was directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum

What is a Title sequence

What is a title sequence

A title sequence is the what films or television programs use to present their title, production team and cast members, or both, this is usually shown on screen with some visual effects and sounds. It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of forced text. Television has become a huge part of people's everyday lives which lead to more and more people staying at home rather than visiting the theatre. This pushed film makers to reinvent film media. Later on, film makers and title designers elaborately designed titles hoping to grab the attention of audience before the film had even started.

The James Bond title sequence is one of my favourite. This is purely because of the creativity behind the different fonts used and the creativity of the title sequence as a whole. The sound and visuals go together as the theme song is played.I believe the quality of the title sequence sets the tone of the movie in terms of what to expect. When I say this I mean if the title sequence looks interesting and exciting, the audience know that they are in for a good interesting film, simply because the title sequence has set the tone.

Title sequences have changed over the years, starting from simple cards with words on it, to large amounts of animation and sound aswell as visual effects used .This is used to interest the audience aswell as give the entire cast behind the production some recognition.
